Minds
for Design
Summer Program for Girls Sponsored by
Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council and UC Riverside, Bourns College of
Engineering
In
an effort to engage more girls in the areas
of science and technology, the Bourns College of Engineering and Girl
Scouts of
San Gorgonio Council, offers
a two-week summer day camp – Minds
for
Design – and a one week resident camp – Engineer
IT Girls – designed to introduce girls to the world
of engineering.
Participants learn how the process of engineering works by
conceptualizing and
creating projects of their own design. Through hands-on activities,
field
trips to engineering firms, guest speakers, and professional mentoring,
the
girls have an opportunity to learn first-hand what it would be like to
work in
the field of engineering. |

The
goal of the program
is to increase the number of women engineering science,
technology,
engineering and math (STEM) fields. Minds
for Design and Engineer IT Girls provide
an inspirational environment staffed with professional female role
models who
guide the girls through hands-on, inquiry based activities. The girls
feel free
to take risks, ask questions and learn by trial and error. The program
is
designed to increase their knowledge of science and engineering and
strengthen
critical thinking skills. By the program’s end the girls
“think like an
engineer” and become inspired to continue taking math and
science courses and
potentially pursue careers in STEM fields.
All
activities take place in lab, classroom, and
dormitory space at UC Riverside.
